Visiting a coin shop
A few notes before you walk into American Certified Bullion in NV. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.
Not every coin shop is a pawn shop
Some do jewelry and scrap. Some do not. Ask if you have gold jewelry, a watch, or diamonds. Do not assume, and do not be put out if coins are what they do. The right shop for coins may send you next door for the rest.
Ask before you photograph coins or people
A picture of a piece in the case is often fine. A picture of another customer, an open buy, or the register is not. Ask first. Many shops are happy to let you shoot a coin you are considering. They are not a film set.
Decide how you want to be paid before the offer
If you are selling, know whether you need cash today, a check, or time to think. Changing the method after they have made a number can change the number. A clear “I would like a check if we agree” at the start saves a second conversation.
Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them
Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.
Ask before you touch anything in the case
The dealer will hand you a coin or put it on a pad. Do not reach into a tray or slide a slab toward yourself. Handle coins by the edges if they are raw. If you drop something, say so immediately.
