Visiting a coin shop
A few notes before you walk into Colonial Trading Company in Brookline, MA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.
“Best I can do” is a sentence, not an insult
They have to sell it, hold it, and stay in business. You can say no. You can ask if they can do better on part of the lot. You should not treat a firm number as a personal slight. A calm “I need to think about that” is enough.
When metals jump, the shop gets busier
A sharp day in gold or silver fills the parking lot. Offers take longer. Lines get real. If you can wait a quieter day, you will get a better conversation. If you cannot, bring patience and a simple list of what you have.
Count money together, then put it away
Whether you are paying or getting paid, count at the counter where both of you can see. Then put it away. That protects you and the shop. If something is off, it is much easier to fix before anyone has left the glass.
Bring the holders, papers, and boxes they came in
Original packaging, certificates, and grading-company holders matter. Do not dump everything into a bag to “make it easier.” The dealer would rather see it the way it has been kept. Leave coins in PCGS, NGC, or ANACS holders.
Stay with your coins
Do not leave a box on the counter and wander the cases. Do not ask the dealer to watch your bag while you go to the car. Your lot stays in front of you until the deal is done or you pack up. That is how both sides stay comfortable.
