Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Colorado Coin in Greenwood Village, CO. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. No magnets, acids, or scratch tests on the pad

The shop has the tools if a test is needed. Do not perform experiments on the glass. You can damage the coin and the counter. If you think something is fake, say why and let them look.

  2. Do not make a deal with another customer at the counter

If you overhear what someone is selling, that is not an invitation. Do not offer to buy their coins, do not quote a price over their shoulder, and do not ask the shop to “introduce you.” The counter is the shop’s workplace. Side deals in the aisle put the dealer in an ugly spot and make other customers uncomfortable.

  3. What is in the case today may be gone tomorrow

Coin shops turn inventory. A picture from last month is not a hold. If you want a date or a grade, call or start a want list. Showing up and hoping the exact piece is still there is how people get disappointed.

  4. When metals jump, the shop gets busier

A sharp day in gold or silver fills the parking lot. Offers take longer. Lines get real. If you can wait a quieter day, you will get a better conversation. If you cannot, bring patience and a simple list of what you have.

  5. Shopping an offer is etiquette when you are honest

“I want to hear one more shop, then I will decide” is adult. “I already promised it to you” when you have not is not. If you come back, say what changed. Dealers respect a straight process. They do not respect being used as a foil.
