Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Fullerton Coins & Stamps in Fullerton, CA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Follow the house rules without a debate

Bags on the floor, backpacks zipped, one person at the glass — shops set these for a reason. Argue about it and the visit is already off. If a rule is unclear, ask. If it is clear, do it.

  2. Do not walk in at closing with a suitcase

Five minutes to close is time to pick up a hold, not to dump an estate. Large lots take time to weigh, look up, and talk through. Call earlier in the day and ask when they can give you a proper look. A shop that is locking the door still has to balance the register and get home.

  3. What is in the case today may be gone tomorrow

Coin shops turn inventory. A picture from last month is not a hold. If you want a date or a grade, call or start a want list. Showing up and hoping the exact piece is still there is how people get disappointed.

  4. Ask if they buy the whole lot or select pieces

Some shops write one number for the box. Some pull the coins they can use. Neither is wrong. Ask which they do before they start. If you need everything gone today, say that. If you only want to sell the silver, say that too.

  5. Saturday morning is often the busy window

That is when collections walk in and regulars stop by. Fine if you like energy. Less fine if you want a long, quiet look at an estate. Midweek late morning is often easier. If you need time, ask when they are slower.
