Visiting a coin shop
A few notes before you walk into Jersey Coin Showcase in NJ. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.
Do not crack a graded holder in the shop
PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and CAC holders are part of the product. Opening one at the counter to “see it better” can wreck the value. If you want it out, that is a decision you make at home, not a demonstration.
A buy offer is not an appraisal
An offer is what this shop will pay today. An appraisal is a written opinion, often for insurance or an estate, and it is a different service. If you need a document, say that first. Do not treat a verbal number as a formal appraisal.
Cash is still common. That is normal.
Coin and bullion shops have worked in cash for a long time. It is not shady by itself. Count together at the counter. Do not count a stack in the parking lot with the door open. If you are uncomfortable carrying cash, say so and ask what else they can do.
Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them
Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.
One conversation at a time
The dealer cannot price a collection, answer a bullion quote, and pull a date from the case at once. If they are mid-deal, wait. If you only need a quick “are you open Saturday,” say that when they glance up — then step back. Courtesy is remembered the next time you walk in.
