Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Midwest Coin & Currency in North Kansas City, MO. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

1. 01

   Ask before you touch anything in the case

   The dealer will hand you a coin or put it on a pad. Do not reach into a tray or slide a slab toward yourself. Handle coins by the edges if they are raw. If you drop something, say so immediately.

   One conversation at a time

   The dealer cannot price a collection, answer a bullion quote, and pull a date from the case at once. If they are mid-deal, wait. If you only need a quick “are you open Saturday,” say that when they glance up — then step back. Courtesy is remembered the next time you walk in.

   Not every coin shop is a pawn shop

   Some do jewelry and scrap. Some do not. Ask if you have gold jewelry, a watch, or diamonds. Do not assume, and do not be put out if coins are what they do. The right shop for coins may send you next door for the rest.

   Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them

   Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.

   Do not assume every shop takes a credit card

   Many do. Some do not. Some take cards on retail and prefer another method when they are buying from you. None of that is a trick. Ask, “Do you take cards?” before you empty your wallet. If they say no, that is an answer, not a negotiation.
